AI ETHICS
FRAMEWORK

When trust is your competitive advantage, AI governance isn't optional. This framework provides the structure to adopt AI responsibly — built where scrutiny is highest, proven where stakes matter most.

These principles are now the foundation of Verified — a full AI governance platform for journalism organizations. The preview tools below demonstrate the methodology. The complete platform is available by invitation.

THIS FRAMEWORK EVOLVED INTO A PLATFORM

Verified is the full governance infrastructure built on these principles — eight interconnected tools, a weekly intelligence feed, and five publishable governance documents, all structured around the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. Built for journalism organizations. Available by invitation.

BACKGROUND

During my time helping to lead AI transformation at a national media organization, I served on the AI Governance Council and on the Policies, Standards & Education subcommittee. What I learned: governance doesn't start with policy documents. It starts with visibility — knowing what AI you're actually using, where the risks are, and who's accountable.

This framework codifies that approach into a repeatable methodology.

THE CHALLENGE

AI is already inside organizations — in communications, content workflows, internal tools. But most have no governance structure to match. That gap creates trust risk. And trust, once lost, is extraordinarily difficult to rebuild.

THE SOLUTION

This framework gives organizations a structured path to AI governance — built on five core principles: Transparency, Human Oversight, Accuracy First, Equity & Inclusion, and Reversibility. These aren't aspirational. They're operational filters that apply to every AI decision.

THE FIVE PRINCIPLES

Operational Filters for Every AI Decision

01

Transparency

When AI touches your work, your audience must know. Disclosure isn't optional — it's foundational to maintaining trust.

02

Human Oversight

AI suggests. Humans decide. Critical decisions that affect people's lives, perceptions, or outcomes require human judgment.

03

Accuracy First

AI systems are probabilistic, not deterministic. Every output must be verified before it reaches your audience.

04

Equity & Inclusion

AI systems reflect the biases in their training data. Evaluate whether tools amplify or mitigate harm to the communities you serve.

05

Reversibility

If a tool or workflow isn't serving your mission, you must be able to pull back without systemic disruption. Build exit ramps into every AI decision.

THE TOOLKIT

Preview Tools — The Methodology in Action

These interactive tools demonstrate the framework approach. Each addresses a distinct dimension of AI governance — from mapping what you have, to assessing risk, to planning metrics. Try them to experience the methodology firsthand.

Tool 01

AI Trust Radar

Six-dimension assessment of organizational trust maturity. Shows your profile in real time — and where to focus first.

Tool 02

AI Inventory Canvas

Map every AI touchpoint — Active, Planned, and Shadow. NIST Govern 1.6 requires organizations to inventory AI systems. This makes it actionable.

Tool 03

Trust Risk Matrix

Prioritize by likelihood and impact. Quadrants map to NIST's four response strategies — Mitigate, Avoid, Transfer, Accept.

Tool 04

Governance Gap Finder

Identify gaps and assign ownership across People, Process, Technology, and Journalism. Outputs a RACI-ready ownership map.

Tool 05

Trust Metrics Planner

Set baselines, 30/90/180-day targets, and accountability for measurable progress. Includes "What We're NOT Measuring" — where intellectual honesty lives.

Policy Builder

Generate governance-aligned policy language informed by your Question Hub responses and real-world exemplars. Builds draft clauses across four governance dimensions — ready to adapt, not just copy.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Organizations That Earn Trust in This Moment Will Keep It for Decades

The question isn't whether AI will touch your work — it already does. The question is whether you're making intentional choices about how.

Policies describe what you believe. Governance proves what you do.

These principles are now the foundation of Verified — built to make governance continuous, accountable, and visible. Not a one-time exercise. An ongoing practice.

Ready to Build the Infrastructure?

Verified is currently in pilot with a select group of journalism organizations. If your organization is ready to move from AI ethics policy to AI governance infrastructure, we'd like to talk.
